Sometimes the best lesson a job can provide is showing you how not to spend the rest of your life. There is value in having something not work out the way you anticipated.

The #1 skill missing from today’s athlete is mental toughness. Refusing to hold oneself accountable to individual & team goals. Blaming others for circumstances. Not fighting through adversity. Pouting & poor body language. Physical skill can only take you so far. Get tough.

If the truth hurts, then so be it. It might hurt your feelings for a couple of days, but at no point should a coach fail to be honest or mislead a player when it comes to development. Athletes can work with the truth. At least they know where they stand. That's important.

S/o to all the parents who watch their kids struggle in sport without trying to save them. Your reward: a gritty, resilient future adult that is used to fighting their own battles.

Once you realize that coaching is actually 99% relationship building and 1% X’s and O’s; you’ll be better off in the long run as a Coach. Without having a relationship with your athletes, no matter how much you know about X’s and O’s you won’t have a lot of success.

I don’t coach because I like winning. I coach to build relationships with athletes who can then use that relationship to get to where they want to go through sports.

Parents: Let your kids be coached. Let them get used to coaches holding them accountable. If you save your children from discomfort, you often keep them from realizing their own strength & ability. Let them grow their character so they can become confident, independent adults.

I believe that the reason there are no leaders on teams anymore, is because kids can’t communicate with each other. As a society, we have deemphasized the ability to look each other in the eyes and effectively relay ideas, concerns, and tips for improvement.

COACHES: Argue all you want that it's not your job to be a program's police man outside of games and practices - But whether you like it or not, your responsibilities to your players, your program, and your school do not end when practice does.

Players: If U are lucky enough to have a coach who is honest, sincere & who truly cares about U as a person, respect him/her enough to give those same qualities back. Don’t jeopardize one of the most important relationships U will ever have by being less than the person U can be.
