So the Google Nest Protect come with Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. Today one of the cells had thermal runaway after 4 years. Thankfully I found out because smoke detector started chirping. 1/6 batteries was hot to touch, and is still warm over 20 minutes later. Eek!

Update: I didn’t tweet about the situation right away, but we are now over an hour after I pulled the batteries and that one Energizer cell is still warm. So I am guessing there is still some amount of runaway occurring but far less with no current flowing.

So let’s say you’re in possession of a single Energizer Lithium battery cell that you suspect is experiencing some amount of thermal runaway. What the hell are you supposed to do with it? Just put it in a ceramic bowl outside and let it chill for awhile?
