Salawat in Jimma, Ethiopia from an unusual direction: West African Sahelian Islamic influence rather than the typical eastern Yemen-Somali-Harar route. An Ethiopian Tijani branch via a Shaykh from Bornu named al-Faqih (Alfaki, Alfa) Ahmad Umar Maqzara youtu.be/_z8iA-ICekc?si…

"And so then I said..." (Insert banger post here, filtering out all coal) "That's nice, honey" She may think she's patronizing you, but subconsciously the lady is intrigued and entertained (this only works if she's not herself on Twitter) Don't knock it 'til you've tried it

I still remember a girl in middle school hearing that I was fasting and saying, "That sucks" My blood boiled then, but now I'd just laugh and say, "You wouldn't get it" Ramadan teaches you patience (sabr) in days without worldly joys - and gratitude (shukr) in nights with them.

For the instrumentally inclined, my cover of a traditional Arsi Oromo nasheed in his praise and in praise of God, as arranged by the late, great Ali Birra (may the earth rest lightly upon him): youtu.be/c0GqnqQ16bQ?si… Hope to visit both of them one day - assalaam alaykumo....

Still, what makes a novel good is: Novel-ty, that is, inimitability. If you can be easily summarized, AI can replace you. But if you've written a "young man fights golems but also works in a café on a coin-shaped yet elemental yet postmodern yet elven yet Islamicate world..."

The Midwest is funny because you'll have transformative life experiences which make a place feel like a mystery adventure setting in the movie of your life, and then you'll come back and be like, wait, that's all it was...? And yet, that's all it had to be.

Somewhere out there is a guy married to multiple women of rival ethnicities, and every time they argue it turns into geopolitics and whose ancestors invented yoghurt or something
