The pitches (shapes and required velocities) that are going to excel at the MLB level are 99% figured out. In the past when it was more ambiguous, you’d have to test your pitches at each level and figure it out from there. Now you know what the explicit goals are in rookie ball.

Feel obligated to point out that, in his career, Devin Williams is a substantially worse pitcher with men on base than with the bases empty. He mostly avoided this by having impossibly good wOBAcon numbers. Once that goes away, the cookie crumbles quickly.

I would imagine the numbers back this up as well because it becomes a 4 down game instead of a 3 down game, and as a defense that’s not a great spot to be. Stopping opponent from getting 10 yards on 4 tries much harder than 10 on 3 tries.
