22nd Oct 1918 Thomas Knowles died of Influenza. He had lied about his age signing up as a 19yr old. His family were able to provide his real DoB hence his age on the headstone making Thomas the youngest official casualty buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery.

This week the #WW2 Medal Index Cards were released by the The National Archives onto paid genealogy sites although there is some free access for a while. I first became aware of these when I acquired an unreturned Card many years ago (below). What do these record cards tell us? 🧵

Thread. On 18/11/1916 the British officially called off the Somme offensive. This was the last day of official battle. Of course the killing would continue. OTD in 1916 an attempt was made to capture Desire Trench by the 4th Canadian and 18th British Division. More…
