BEER. - A group of 40 threads or a group of 20 splits or dents with two threads through each. The warper counts by the number of beers in 36 inches. This accounts for the Bradford set system being based upon the number of beers of 40 threads each in 36 inches.

SPLIT. - The term given to the space between two wires in a reed.

SPYNDLE. - 14,400 yards of jute yarn.

METRIC COUNT. - 1000 metres per kilogramme: 496yds. per pound.

ERIBE. - An expression applied to a length of cloth cut from a full length with the object of removing a damaged portion.

WINCEYETTE. - A fine single warp flannelette, woven grey, piece bleached and raised in finishing.

FLANNEL. - An all-wool fabric, usually of a plain or twilled make, of a soft and if possible, not-shrinking character, to make it suitable for being worn next to the skin. (Shrunk and raised).

OVERCHECK. - Refers to stripes introduced in the direction of warp and weft by weave or coloured threads over and above a smaller and usually more subdued check effect, which forms the ground.

PROOFING. - A process through which goods pass whereby the are rendered impervious to rain and are also supposed, as a rule, to be unspottable and unshrinkable.

BARATHEA. - A heavy 26 1/2oz. per yd. (56 x 36) fabric employed for army clothing purposes.

BENDERS (Cotton). - A heavy type of cotton grown in the bends of the Mississippi River.

CHIFFON TWIST. - Hard-twisted, single threads of raw silk, usually having from 50 to 100 turns per inch. Used for making chiffons, mousseline-de-soie, etc.

RAFIA, RAPHIA or RAFFIA FIBRE. - A fibre obtained from the leaves of the raphia palm, which is grown in Africa. Much used for mats and other plaited articles.

OVERGROWN WOOL. - Wool too long for its particular quality. Double-growth wool.
