Zach Groshell Learning is ‘active’. That doesn’t mean working it out from scratch. It’s listening carefully. Attention to detail. Especially the high frequency errors. It’s head down, focussed practice at length. Precise & concise, memorable, preemptive teaching helps make learning far easier.

I see a lot of schools, and in many of them behaviour is below what it could and should be. Very often I see some of the most common strategic mistakes in these schools: 1. Vague expectations of behaviour 2. No staff training in implementing the school behaviour policy 3. A

Every time I hear someone say that ‘building relationships is how we get children to behave’ I’m amazed how often they then don’t define what A) they mean by a relationship B) how to actually build this mysterious thing. This leads to multiple errors, eg trying to get kids to

Tom Bennett OBE A simple way to cut through to the adult 'children are angels' proponents is to ask: did you ever misbehave? Ever fib to your parents? Ever not do your homework? Get distracted in class? Rare saints aside, most say yes, so you can say 'if you did, why wouldn't children now?'

The SNP’s promise to close the attainment gap lies in ruins. By Nicola Sturgeon’s own yardstick, her party has betrayed a whole generation of young people from poorer backgrounds. We urgently need a plan to drive up education performance and improve outcomes for young people.

A group of S4 boys push past a depute and refuse to go back to her when instructed, with two laughing and audibly telling her to F off as they go on their way. Not much chance for the rest of us really is there?

A colleague is told "F*** off you English c***" by an S1 pupil. He is told by a depute that because the boy's stepfather is English and relations are difficult, his accent triggered the pupil. The pupil is in school as normal today.

One student can ruin the learning of an entire class That kid deserves and education but so do the other 29 kids in that room Regardless his or her reason, it is simply unjust to let one child daily compromise the education of everyone else

In what was an almost weekly occurrence last year, three intruders go undetected for four hours, and in the meantime threaten a number of pupils. It's astonishing that three decades on from Dunblane, school security is invariably non-existent.

It is both depressing and a threat to a democratic society, to find so many people keen to silence those with whom they disagree. I am with Noam Chomsky who has put it thus “If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all”.

Brain researchers have made their findings clear. Political ideologists, from those who run university "education" depts, to neoliberal conservatives, deliberately take no notice. The dogs bark, and the caravan moves on. Children and teachers suffer.
