How did we get to a point where students can miss 50+ days, struggle with basic reading and math, and still get promoted? Then we act surprised when they’re years behind. This didn’t happen overnight…it’s been building for decades.

When you don’t brush, floss, or go to the dentist, you don’t get to blame the dentist for bad teeth. When a student is consistently absent and barely does any of the work, don’t blame the school or teacher(s) when that student fails.

Schools are now structured so that the overwhelming number of student misbehaviors essentially have ZERO consequences. This is horrible for teachers…but it’s even worse for the students who want to learn!

The genius of great teaching lies in its simplicity. The tragedy of modern education is how complex we’ve made it. To be truly great, a teacher must resist the noise of fads, trends, and buzzwords—and return to the art of simplifying everything.

It’s sad that so many teachers on my campus view teaching as a popularity contest.

We don’t have a classroom management problem. We have an emotional regulation crisis that teachers are being asked to handle. Somehow, “classroom management” has turned into: • de-escalating trauma • supporting anxiety and depression • calming panic attacks • breaking up

One of the biggest issues in education: The people making decisions about what’s best for students aren’t teachers. Teachers often aren’t even asked. And neither are students or parents.

When you are in 11th grade, and you cannot keep your hands to yourself and your mouth shut during the national anthem at a spirit assembly, there is a serious problem!

Teacher confession: I haven’t changed my sideboard or referenced goals or essential questions in three weeks—yet somehow all of my students were proficient or better on their WWII test. It’s almost like doing so is a waste of time.
