Passable Wargamer, good enough historian, average to poor front row, nostalgic Old Pangbournian. 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Retweets + likes =/= endorsement.

A French raiding Squadron clashes with Royal Navy escorts and East Indiamen amongst the reefs and shoals of the Laccadives. One of the two Indiamen was lost but the French squadron suffered such grievous damage that their threat must be considered dissipated for quite some time

#VEDay80 - days like today remind me of how much British military history lost with the passing of Professor Richard Holmes in 2011.

So two historians who I like very much interviews a politician I don’t like much at all. Does this mean I have not like the historians now and that they are in fact some way bad? Asking for a friend

5th Regiment of Foot at St Lucia in 1778 Calling these fellows done (because my patience is only so long and I owe Dr Andrew Bamford some writing) But there’ll be 3 more bases in this battalion and I’d like to go on to do the rest of General Meadows’ advanced brigade at Vigie

Last week Tom Golding-Lee joined me in Sunny Scotland, we visited a LOT of battlefields, over two days on a road trip (with wild camping). After discussing 1689 battle of Killiekrankie we went down to the river, to cool off & discussing Soldier's Leap. youtube.com/shorts/5sLVoZ1…

Had a brilliant time in Scotland with Marcus Cribb. There are a few videos of our “war walks” - here’s the one on the Battle of Glen Shiel and the forgotten Jacobite 19 youtu.be/uM59hzefG8A?si…

“The Midnight Squad” While I’m a long 18th century chap, I am fascinated by WWI. The Not So Quiet battlefield tour to France this week was brilliant. My favourite find was this trench raiding squad roll of honour - carved into a chalk quarry that was used as a barracks

I was on a podcast! Christian Parkinson had me on to talk about the origins of the War of Jenkins Ear and the assault on Cartagena - as well as the sad epilogue on Cuba. It’s the first podcast I’ve done and I really enjoyed it! Thanks Christian! open.spotify.com/episode/7zB23m…

16 June 1809 // 64-gun 3rd-rate HMS Agamemnon was wrecked with no lives lost after running aground off Maldonado in the mouth of the River Plate. Agamemnon was commanded by Nelson 1793-6 and was known as 'Nelson's favourite'. Her wreck was found in 1993. #RoyalNavy #shipwreck

This is a classic Hastingsism. Strip the military organisation (in this case the Hapsburg Army) of its political and economic context and ignore the fact that there were significant (if poorly resourced) attempts to modernise and that it had a professional General Staff

An important thread. At the Vigie in 1778 one under strength British brigade held off a force at least 5 times their size. This was not an incompetent army.

On this day in 1743: THE BATTLE OF DETTINGEN George II becomes the last British monarch to lead troops in battle as sovereign. British, Hanoverian and Austrian troops defeated a French army in Bavaria. In some ways it was more a very lucky escape than a glorious triumph

Bravo to Robert Lyman 🇺🇦 and Jack Bowsher - Thunder Run: Meiktila 1945 on The Forgotten War Podcast: Burma Campaign WW2 for mentioning the “final charge of British Cavalry” at Toungoo in March 1942. I converted some Sikh Sowars (who apparently took part in the charge) from Perry Miniatures figures some years back. I’ll have to find them.
