"People having their sentences shortened are likely older than their years. Some 10% of the prison population in #Connecticut is over 55, & physically in worse shape than a 55-year-old. These are not people at high risk of recidivism." Hugh Bailey on CT's pause on commutations:

But as this new report shows, without action from the Census Bureau, states can only go so far in fixing this. For example, the Bureau of Prisons refused to provide data to states, making it impossible to reallocate people in federal facilities to their home communities.

A #WorldPressFreedomDay reminder that the replacement of physical mail with crappy scans in many US prisons is basically a media blackout, as well as a strain on family ties and a deterrent to voting. Prisons are making it as hard as they can for the press to reach behind bars.

What a huge victory for people in #Colorado prisons and their families. FCC needs to take note of the energy building to regulate prison telecom products. More and more states are agreeing that communication should be free or virtually free.

People on probation/parole are especially affected by abortion bans: Supervision often comes with a ban on out-of-state travel, extending total state control over someone’s right to have an abortion if they live in a state that has outlawed it. Read more: prisonpolicy.org/blog/2022/06/3…

173,000 women are locked up today, 50,000 for a drug offense alone. About 80% are mothers, many of them single mothers to minor children.
