These are people, not statistics. An American has died of #COVID19 every 1.5 minutes since February. That’s like losing Salt Lake City or 1450 plane loads of people. So why do we become numb to an enormous death toll? Sarah Elizabeth Richards for National Geographic nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/0…
Trevor Bedford Margaret Brennan Fred Hutch Cancer Center Eli Lilly and Co. What do you mean by "convergent evolution"? Does that mean that more strains will continue to emerge as long as there is virus circulating?
Face The Nation Margaret Brennan Fred Hutch Cancer Center Eli Lilly and Co. I'll try to clarify, but longer version is here: x.com/trvrb/status/1…. Basically, important sites in the virus spike protein, like 484 and 501 are mutating independently (convergently) in South Africa and in Brazil. Two "variants" but the end result is similar viruses.
Trevor Bedford Face The Nation Fred Hutch Cancer Center Eli Lilly and Co. Does that mean that all of us will need to get a #COVID19 vaccine every year just like a flu shot? And will COVID continue to be a threat until the entire globe is vaccinated?
Margaret Brennan Face The Nation Fred Hutch Cancer Center Eli Lilly and Co. My expectation is indeed yearly vaccines (x.com/trvrb/status/1…). There will be continued virus evolution, but I anticipate this becomes just another respiratory disease that is largely controlled through vaccination. 1/2
Margaret Brennan Face The Nation Fred Hutch Cancer Center Eli Lilly and Co. I'm not sure if it ends up looking more like mumps where there are occasional outbreaks in high contact settings or more like seasonal influenza where there is a yearly epidemic. I think the difference between these will likely depend on vaccine uptake. 2/2
