Richard Valpy died on this day in 1836. He was headmaster of Reading Grammar School & a notorious flogger. Mary Russell Mitford spoke of him as being vainer than a peacock. Statue below is in St Laurence's Church in #rdguk He's immortalised by Valpy Street next to Reading Museum
