42 years ago today on Thursday the 29th of April 1982 Vulcan B2 XM607 lands at Wideawake airfield on Ascension Island having flown 9 hours non stop from RAF Waddington, following not far behind was her sister Vulcan B2 XM598.

OTD 42 years ago it was this mans 50th birthday & for Flt/Lt Dick Russell it would be a birthday to remember, he had just been told he was the AARI on the reserve Vulcan crew to bomb Port Stanley but fate would soon change that.

5/7/2014 at RAF Waddington I had the pleasure of meeting two ex Flt/Lts together that played a big part in Operation Black Buck 1 and the XM607 crew, now Sqn/Ldr Martin Withers DFC(pilot/Captain) & Sqn Ldr Richard(dick)Russell AFC(AARI).

42 years ago this week the Waddo engineering wing designed fitted & tested pylons for the Vulcan, they was going to use the AS.37 Martel missile but later opted for the AGM 45 Shrike, XM597 & XM598 were fitted for the SEAD missions with XM597 carrying 4 on BB6
