😡 Staff and students at Oxford Brookes University are resisting massive cuts across a range of programmes at the university.

✊ Last week I spoke at the Oxford Brookes UCU rally against the cuts and in solidarity with the affected staff and students.

The proposed cuts at Oxford Brookes are not justified. They are not necessary.

#Oxford Oxford Brookes UCU (University and College Union) met with staff and students to discuss upper management’s shameful plot to increase profits by sacking 48 educational staff. National UCU General Secretary Jo Grady pledged full support for the local branch.

Students at #Oxford Brookes University organised a peaceful #SaveOurLecturers sit-in at the Headington campus. Students protested with placards, and networked together and with staff and UCU members and officers.

The VS scheme is already having a terrible effect on staff & students:
• increase of teaching workloads by 50% in some cases
• closure of modules this semester with little to no notice
• PhD students and UG dissertation students losing supervisors

In November managers Oxford Brookes declared 48 jobs “at risk” with 20 needing to be cut. Our campaigning, negotiating & balloting have reduced the number of compulsory redundancies to two. We still intend to reduce that number to zero. 1/2

Staff morale is at records low even before the announced cuts according to wellbeing survey. We need to protect people and, if changes to the university are necessary after what we think is a more appropriate consultation, let’s work out together what is best. #stoptheSHAMcuts

In coming days the fate of many people at Oxford Brookes University is being decided. We want to reiterate how unjustified compulsory redundancies would be & how devastating this would be to what our university needs. Please listen to us and to proposals by those affected! #stoptheSHAMcuts
