Piping plovers! Seen in Queens this morning. I’m VERY happy to see these chicks protected from nest to shore (roped off). Photos taken with a long lens outside the enclosure/ cropped. These delicate families need our protection.

It’s not hard to help shorebirds thrive, and one of the easiest ways is by keeping dogs leashed at the beach. Audubon Society shares more about why we should all . audubon.org/news/dog-lover…

The Piping Plover chicks at Whitefish Point are now two weeks old. All four chicks are still going strong and are looking bigger by the day! ~ Joselyn Ralph, Piping Plover Monitor

That dad bod is a super adaptation to provide your chicks with refuge from the blasting heat. Even when your chicks are reaching that fledge age, nothing like a good sun shield from dad.

~Half of all WA FATE colonies (n=77) failed between 2017/18 - 2021/22. Predation (32%) and inundation (27%) were the leading causes. Disturbance was a recurring threat, impacting ≥30% of colonies. Thanks to all those who contributed. See link👇 cience

American oystercatcher looking gleeful to me as she prances away from the incoming tide with a tasty sand flea in her beak. American oystercatchers with an eye fleck are usually female! (Queens, New York)

We are so pleased to share that fencing and signage has been added to the pier by the protected beach to alert the less plover-savvy that this portion of Montrose is indeed restricted and literally for the birds. 😊

It’s shorebird baby time! American Oystercatcher keeps a close eye on her chick as it forages for dinner on a NYC beach. If you see these birds, please give them space.💕
