This window c.1910 comes from the National Union of Mineworkers office which closed in Dunfermline 1967.
It shows modern workings with a pit pony & a scene of a tunnel probably at the bottom of a shaft with rail ends.

- Many Lithuanians fled the repression of the Russian Empire early C20th

By 1914, 4000 such workers arrived in Lanarkshire & most settled in Bellshill - allegedly many were recruited by coal & iron masters Merry + Cunninghame of Carnbroe

Bedlay Colliery was sunk by William Baird & Co. to mine coking coal in 1905 and Annathill village was purpose built to house its workers. The houses have external stairs, enclosed landings & some attic rooms.

It was demolished 1981

More of the story and the potential energy transitions. The re-profiled will eventually be grassed, grazed by sheep and home to a solar farm and the mine water is a stable 16C and viable for geothermal heat.
