Whatton Lodge, Gullane was bought for miners by the Scottish National Union of Mineworkers in 1947, by 1981 c640 convalescents visited yearly.

By 1914, 4000 such workers arrived in Lanarkshire & most settled in Bellshill - allegedly many were recruited by coal & iron masters Merry + Cunninghame of Carnbroe

Bedlay Colliery was sunk by William Baird & Co. to mine coking coal in 1905 and Annathill village was purpose built to house its workers. The houses have external stairs, enclosed landings & some attic rooms.
It was demolished 1981

1969 peak production = 16,453 tons in one week.
1989 shut
1992 re-opened, buy-out by a miners' co-operative.
1997 closed
