Threats to the European project from the far right remain prominent, however. Franziska Brantner: 'We need to avoid the European Parliament becoming a far right parliament, because that would mean the end of Europe.'

On the question of support for the European project, there is hope. Clément Beaune: 'It is more fashionable to be pro-European. Being anti-European is almost a taboo.'

Communication and messaging is a crucial dimension to the Green Deal. Cristina Peñasco: '25% of our citizens believe that this Green Deal is a hoax. We need to take into consideration not only the climate goals, but what it’s calling to their hearts.'

Bringing together Franco-German perspectives, Franziska Brantner: 'German-French agreement drives many of our projects. We have been able to define a very precise agenda for the next European Commission. '

Political engagement amongst younger generations must be especially considered. On the Brexit vote, Clément Beaune: 'The younger generation were convinced that they were going to win and so they didn’t go. There was a really low turnout.'

Developing on Franco-German views, Clément Beaune highlights defence & security : 'There is no easy agreement on these issues. It could have been a political disaster but we are moving forward. Look at Ukraine - France and Germany are leading contributors.'

The social aspect of the transition has to be considered. Barbara Pompili: 'Ultimately, the people in our countries want to understand what they will do in the future, what the future will look like for them, and especially for their children.'
