Renovation of #KenilworthCastle commenced c.1571, with the building of 'Leicester's Gatehouse' providing a new grand entrance, with easier access to the deer park and nearby St Nicholas' Church, and 'Leicester's Building' - purpose-built accommodation for #ElizabethI's visits.

#RobertDudley employed #WilliamSpicer, originally a mason from Somerset whose career took off in the 1550s when employed by Sir John Thynne at #Longleat, to modernise and expand #KenilworthCastle, including construction of purpose-built lodgings for #ElizabethI & a new gatehouse.

#OTD in 1575, #ElizabethI reportedly visited St Nicholas' Church, #Kenilworth to take Sunday mass; she is likely to have left the #KenilworthCastle via the newly-built 'Leicester's Gatehouse'. The Queen was also said to have attended the church for mass the following Sunday.

In preparation for #ElizabethI's visit to #KenilworthCastle for the 'Kenilworth Festivities' or 'Princely Pleasures' in Jul 1575, #RobertDudley commissioned a pair of matching portraits by Italian artist Federico Zuccaro, the original sketches of which still survive. #tudorart
