Lots of chat about whether IMGs are pushing local grads out of FY1 jobs.

So I thought I might look at this from the other end and have a bit of a look at the rise of international English-speaking medical schools and whether this is having any effect on the local market.

I have big time respect for IMGs who work so hard to become doctors in the US. It's a very long road, but some of my best colleagues over my career have been IMGs. If you are an international applicant, there is a bright future for you as a doctor in the US. Keep grinding.

yes, you want IMGs to be allocated after UK grads and citizens. understood. but dont keep making incorrect claims about what it’s like in other countries where IMGs are not given leftover slots.

This is not fully true/correct. A loooot of IMGs from Europe and worldwide get into first year residency (training) in the USA. There’s no separate Fy1 and fy2. It’s a bit harder in Canada but still happens. Same setup there too.

Cant speak for Aus as i dont know that pathway

Over 15,000 NHS doctors left UK within this year to work in Canada, Australia, America & the Middle East.
More locum rate cuts, slower recruitment of IMGs, more doctors are even leaving this year.
UK is losing its goldmine

Visas are a huge issue hitting IMGs hard. They are faced with 2 choices when they CCT in GP

1) Take an ever dwindling number of salaried posts, potentially at a reduced rate to fulfil their visa requirements

2) Return home

The UK is training GPs & then forcing them to leave
