🌍Explainer! On #EnvironmentAct targets
Yesterday we made a formal complaint that Defra UK missed its own legal deadline for publishing #EnvironmentAct targets in England.
These are important targets that will help set ambition for and drive nature’s recovery.
BUT ... 🧵
Young The Wildlife Trusts Ambassadors meet Dr Mya-Rose Craig later to hand in The Wildlife Trusts response to Gov's #environmentAct targets: 60,000+ DISAGREE with the level of ambition for species abundance. First time they've done something so big for wildlife🍀🤞Wish us luck! I'll pass it on

The #EnvironmentAct statutory instruments have been published. It's good to see the target to halt the decline of species abundance by 2030 in law.
The list of species is a poem to Parliament that surely demands action and investment.

Just 1/4 SSSIs in national parks are in good condition, so new targets today for protected landscapes are important.
Now Government must support them to succeed:
🪶Rapid capital investment to improve SSSIs
🪶 Regulations to link management plans to #EnvironmentAct targets.
2 years ago today, the #EnvironmentAct achieved Royal Assent. 🎂
The Act promised 'world-leading' protections for nature & the environment, but our Government has failed to cut illegal deforestation from supply chains.
We don't need more promises. We need action #ForOurWorld .
We are appalled at the lack of ambition shown in the #EnvironmentAct targets.
Agricultural pollution has not been taken as the serious threat it is and the failure to implement an overall target for river health shows a severe lack of care.

📜 The #EnvironmentAct 2021 made it compulsory for every area in England to have a Local Nature Recovery Strategy.

With Greener UK Wildlife and Countryside Link & others we have sent a formal complaint to Defra UK
UK Gov must be held to account for missing legal deadline to give #EnvironmentAct targets for air quality, water health, nature, & waste in England. We need these ASAP.

My educated guess is that the 2021 State of Environment Report makes for very bad reading and even worse headlines! So these are my headlines:
Environmental mismanagement on a massive scale leaves iconic animals and GBR on edge of collapse. #EnvironmentAct
