What a brilliant day out at Abberton Res in Essex, the bird was proving difficult late morning but did give itself up eventually.

Canvasback at Layer Breton causeway, Abberton Reservoir, Essex. SO difficult to find and stay on, in what felt like gale force wind!

After a very brief sighting late morning, then 2 minutes worth at 1310 and a solid 25 minutes of viewing from 1410 I managed some good scope views of the Canvasback at Abberton Res today despite the 40mph winds at times

A total of 620 Pochard seen across the two causeways at Abberton Reservoir today is by far my highest single site count of this species, just a shame that the Canvasback had gone awol with no sign in several hours of searching. Redhead Smew and 5 Red-crested Pochard the best.

A few more phone-scoped shots of the Canvasback from Abberton Reservoir this morning, was fascinating to watch its gular patch bulging while displaying to the female Pochards

I must admit I was pretty excited when I found this drake Canvasback at Flixton gravel pits in north Suffolk late this afternoon. However, investigative works by Alex Lees yielded some pretty frustrating results….(1/4)

A return to Abberton in the hope of better light for photography was sadly unsuccessful, a real shame as the forecast was good and the Canvasback showed well.
