On April 5, 1839 Robert Smalls was born enslaved in Beaufort, SC. His mother, Lydia, couldn’t have predicted that her son would eventually come to own the land on which they were once enslaved, or that he’d live in the home as a future US Congressman, or die a free man in 1915.
