The Lab Equipment and PPE Fairy is making deliveries around Richmond today so IB students can collect data for their chemistry Extended Essays at home. So good to see their faces (from a safe distance)!🧪

Advice from honors chem student to next year's students: "TRUST THE PROCESS. This class can be confusing but every lesson has a purpose & in the end you will come out a better chemist & better student overall." People, when these kids are in charge, we'll be in good hands.

This was presented at a chemistry teachers’ conference (ChemEd) by Bassam Shakhashiri in 2017. This is extremely timely and important to understand. Don't be bamboozled.

Year 10 looks very different, but there’s a smile behind my nerdy mask! In a lot of ways, teaching in this hybrid model makes me feel like a first-year teacher again...but on day 1 the kids showed a LOT of patience and kindness. Let’s learn some chemistry, Titans! 🧪

The IB Chem HL scholars are deep in data collection for their individually-designed experiments! 🧪 My favorite part is the troubleshooting/re-thinking of procedures...you know, the real scientific process!

Instead of giving students a lot of practice problems, have them do 1 or 2 questions but find 4 ways to represent the solution/process. There is a ton of cognitive science behind this, and it's great assessment/feedback for instruction.

I always wait to address this until it comes up organically in class discussions, but WOWZER - the misconception that theories become laws once they are better supported by evidence is a really persistent one.

I don’t know why it took me 12 yrs to do this, but I gave students a measurement w/ unit and asked them to draw the instrument from which it was taken. It REALLY helped them understand why we care about sig figs and helped me to identify lingering misconceptions. #modchem

Peter Liljedahl⁩’s newest version of meaningful notes for BTC really drove some incredible conversation today - in both the construction of the notes and in their revision upon seeing other groups’ boards.
