Students rocked our Literary Art Camp last week at the SC Public Library! We looked at many artists and their connections to music. We also focused on musicians- particularly within rock and jazz, but other genres as well. I loved these kids!! Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes

For the first part of Monday's Literary Art Camp, we learned about Wassily Kandinsky's ability to "see" music. We then painted our own interpretations of various types of music- from Tchaikovsky to Pharrell Williams! Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes

The second part of Monday's lesson focused on Jackson Pollock and action painting. His method involved motion similar to dancing and created visual rhythm and movement. We made our own version of action painting with straws, glue, and salt. Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes

Tuesday's Literary Art Camp focused on Jazz and the art of Romare Bearden. We learned that Romare was deeply connected to the people, places, and music he loved. We then created mixed media collage representing our own personal connections to music. Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes

On Wednesday, we rocked. We looked at the geometrical artwork of Sonia Delaunay and listened to the guitar sounds of Jimi Hendrix. We then designed our own life-sized guitars, printed shapes and lines, and added color. Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes

On Thursday, we returned to Jazz and artist Piet Mondrian's "Broadway Boogie Woogie." We focused on patterns as rhythm as we created low-relief sculpture that simulated his style. Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes

We finished our Literary Art Camp on Friday with a focus on percussionist Tito Puente and a look at the rhythmic works of Vincent Van Gogh and Alma Woodsey Thomas. We made drums and tambourines that were decorated with artwork in their styles. Star City JBE #WhateverItTakes
