#2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene), and #5 PP (polypropylene), plastics do not leach chemicals

#3 PVC can leach hormone-disrupting chemicals into the liquids they are storing. When incinerated, PVC releases synthetic carcinogens.

#6 PS is made of polystyrene and has been shown to leach styrene, a probable human carcinogen, into food and drinks.

#7 OTHER (polycarbonate plastics) bottles may leach Bisphenol A (BPA). See the larger issue above for more information on BPA.

Check the numbers on all plastic containers, and try to buy only glass and ceramic food storage containers.

Stay away from plastic baby bottles instead for glass. Most experts agree that BPA leaching is small, but consider the cumulative effect.
