✨New from me and my amazing coauthors on audio-as-data🎙️ For both speech-to-text and computational phonology tools, we find that results across tools are generally similar, but some subtle preprocessing differences can materially change the output doi.org/10.17645/mac.7…

A new study in PNAS had 19,857 Facebook users and 15,585 Instagram users deactivate their accounts for 6 weers before the 2020 U.S. election. Facebook deactivation reduced votes for Trump by 2.6% (p = .015). In other words, staying on Facebook *increases* support for Trump. I

🚨New today in PNASNews ‼️w/ @helenmargetts: In a pre-registered experiment (n=8,587), we find little evidence that 1:1 personalization — aka microtargeting — enhances the persuasive influence of political messages generated by GPT-4.  pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… 1/7 👇🏼

We are happy to release the first results of a RCT of a US program that provided $1,000/month unconditionally for 3 years to 1,000 individuals in the treatment group, with a group of 2,000 people receiving $50/month serving as the control. These are sizable transfers. 1/ 🧵

New meta-analysis (2024) finds human-AI collaboration is task-dependent: performance increases for creative & open-ended tasks (like content creation), but performance drops for decision-making tasks; human-AI collaboration seems to work best when humans already outperform AI

We recently added several analyses to our paper on the employment effects of a guaranteed income. 🚨 These new analyses include, for the first time, administrative data on income and employment and results for marriage and divorce, among other outcomes. Read on for results! 1/

There's a new kind of coding I call "vibe coding", where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists. It's possible because the LLMs (e.g. Cursor Composer w Sonnet) are getting too good. Also I just talk to Composer with SuperWhisper

"A calculator app? Anyone could make that." Not true. A calculator should show you the result of the mathematical expression you entered. That's much, much harder than it sounds. What I'm about to tell you is the greatest calculator app development story ever told.

📈Out today in PNASNews!📈 In a large pre-registered experiment (n=25,982), we find evidence that scaling the size of LLMs yields sharply diminishing persuasive returns for static political messages.  🧵:
