People are trying to cancel the great Russian novelists because of terrible things done by the Russian state. Tolstoy & Dostoevsky foresaw the savagery and hysteria of the twentieth century and tried to fight them. This xenophobia and incuriosity will be the death of art.

groceries? get em delivered. books? buy em on amazon. fuck libraries and bookstores. stop buying cds, vinyls, and dvds, it's all on the cloud! movie theaters? obsolete. subscribe to 10 different platforms instead! stay inside. be afraid of your neighbors. work til you die

Truly excellent piece by Roy Price. The cultural damage of Netflix buying Warner Bros will go far beyond movies and TV. In 1890 every US industry was "consolidated," from railroads and banking to sugar and whiskey, making a mockery of "free enterprise" and leaving consumers

A lot of people are noticing that the text in the modern reader doesn't help the student answer the question. That is an intentional design decision. It's because modern "reading" lessons teach children to look to the illustration for clues instead of "depending on the text".

I love that the villain of the film is a child’s tablet. I love how it’s honest about the effect these devices have on kids: how they rob them of sleep, play, & friends. I hope it starts a discussion of the dangers of letting screens be babysitters. I hope parents will listen.

You’ve smelled this your entire life and it was never the rain. The smell of rain isn’t rain. It’s a molecule called geosmin, produced by soil bacteria. Humans can detect it at just 5 parts per trillion, thousands of times more sensitive than most smells. When raindrops hit dry

If you want pleasure, if you want wisdom, if you want meaning, you need to read folklore and fairy-tales. Very few things in life have brought me more joy than these stories. Our world has gone astray because we dismiss the importance of the old tales.

What I love about older books is the diversity of female characters: cheery Anne Shirley; witty Elizabeth Bennet; sensible Jane Eyre; courageous Éowyn; faithful Lucy Pevensie, or headstrong Jo March. All admirable characters that I think are great models for young girls.

I’m begging you to keep your mind sharp. Do puzzles, learn crafts, study history & languages, commit your favorite poems to memory. Infinite scrolling and AI are wrecking brains both young and old. If you don’t love learning, you’re not going to make it.

Buy CDs. Buy DVDS. Buy vinyl. Buy books and read them. Buy newspapers and magazines and print quarterlies and read them, too! You won’t believe how amazing it feels to pick up your entertainment and enjoy it without notifications interrupting, without strangers starting

Saw the film again yesterday, and spent the rest of the day with my wife Sujani Sanjeevi talking endlessly about Grace & Rocky’s friendship, soaking in the soundtracks, and as soon as we heard the “Time No Fishing” track, we felt like watching the film again ❤️ #ProjectHailMary

My niece has parents who keep their phones largely hidden so she doesn’t see them on it. She’s never had her own tablet. At four years old, she has the focus to sit through an entire two-hour film. She’s rapidly learning to read. She loves Alice, Harry Potter, A Christmas Carol.
