Kudos to Air France for managing my lost luggage well. They left my bag in Paris during a layover. When we realised that in Bangalore, they quickly took down our details, gave a receipt, sent an email confirmation, called us the next day, and had it delivered home within 36hrs.

These two charts from the World Bank’s India Development Update released yesterday highlight the success in high-skill exports and the failure to grab job-creation opportunities as China exits sectors such as textiles.

Came across this short, punchy primer on how climate change affects mental health through its impact on extreme weather events, heatwaves, nighttime warming, air pollution, infectious diseases, climate anxiety and water insecurity. wellcome.org/news/explained…

I recently came across the inspiring story of Georgia Bell, a British runner who came back from a five-year hiatus, self-doubt and injuries to win bronze in 1500m at the 2024 Olympics. All while managing a full-time job with a cybersecurity firm for much of her Olympics prep.

Over half of the residents of India’s five largest cities missed a day of work due to high temperatures. However, this climate-induced loss of productivity is far more likely to afflict poorer communities (as measured by asset ownership). Fascinating findings from Artha Global.

India's food security act prevented stunting for 1.8mn children in just eight states, a 7.2 p.p reduction in its prevalence. This effect is more pronounced in ages 0-2 and in years with low rainfall. Interesting second-order effects driving this finding. voxdev.org/topic/health/w…

My book, Caged Tiger, is currently available on Amazon at a steep discount. At ~₹330, this is the lowest price it has been at and quite likely the lowest it can be. If the hardcover cost has held you back from reading the book, this might be a good time. amzn.in/d/2cM19QW

Another set of great findings from Artha Global's Centre for Rapid Insights. Only 26% of India's urban residents receive 24x7 piped water supply. While another 36% receive it daily (not constant), they need to incur significant costs for expensive tanks, pumps, etc.

I will be at RightsCon this week, co-hosting a session on measuring inclusion in digital public infrastructure. Join me and other participants to discuss how we can ensure that infrastructure in ID, payments, etc. do not leave behind vulnerable populations.

“A study of 1,047 older adults (average age 81) found those eating eggs more than once daily had a 47% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia risk” - Dan Go newsletter.

Recently attended the launch of the AI for Global Development accelerator program. While expected gains are large (~90% cost reduction for some), there are also heightened risks (eg. privacy of HIV status) and unexpected uptake barriers (eg. inability to give phone permissions).

Though India allows more work hours than Japan, these must be met every single week - unlike Japan, where they can be averaged over a month or year. The result? Japan may need fewer people to get the same outcome in a seasonal business. Another great insight from Prosperiti.

Latest newsletter from Artha Global Centre for Rapid Insights - over 55% in 8 North Indian states say they or a family member have experienced pollution-induced respiratory illness (not surprising). Here's the shocker, though - nearly a quarter of them do nothing about it!

Amyloid beta, the protein associated with Alzheimer’s, starts building up as early as our 20s. Hence, what we do early in our life affects our chances of getting Alzheimer’s later in life. Regular exercise, for eg, reduces probability of getting the condition by 20-40%.
