Cases of invasive Group A Strep are rare, but parents should be aware of what to look out for. If you think your child is seriously unwell, call 999 or go to A&E. More info ➡ ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2022/12/05/gro…

Dr John Campbell’s video where he falsely claims that the vaccine caused a brain injury is a good example of how people like John who have no understanding of how to do research can be taken in by dodgy papers that should never have been published. youtu.be/cB14tw5ZqbY

ONS have today updated their analysis of mortality rates in England based on vaccination status. Key result is that whether we consider all-cause deaths or deaths with COVID, the age-standardised mortality rate is higher for unvaccinated people. Chart 1 - All causes of death.

The difference in the COVID mortality rate is much narrower than earlier in the pandemic. This is likely to be a result of unvaccinated people acquiring some immunity from prior infections. Chart 2 - deaths involving COVID.

Note the caveat that this data should not be used to measure vaccine effectiveness as there are other differences between the groups. Indeed we can see that non-COVID death rates are also higher for unvaccinated. ONS bulletin and link to data set is here: ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulati…

Hospital admissions with COVID in England increased by 25% in-week. Our R-value has risen to 1.14. Admissions slightly fell in London (-8%) but rose elsewhere. Biggest increases in the South East (+51%) and North West (+37%). Acute bed occupancy is up by 22%.

Pregnant women 🤰🏽🤰🏻🤰🏿🤰🏾🤰🏼 Listen to my brilliant colleague Nurin and book your COVID-19 vaccination today. It is very safe for you and baby, and much safer than COVID-19 infection (the negative replies are misinformed and come from general antivax propaganda)

There was indeed a 30% increase in admissions in the previous week – but from a low base. When starting from a low number, big relative increases are not hard to get. We are still far below the last two wave peaks, which were themselves below last year’s peaks. 2/12

The % of positive PCR tests (orange line - note that almost all PCR tests now are in hospital patients with respiratory symptoms) have climbed too but again from a low base and are nowhere near their peak and are not climbing as fast as they have in previous waves. 3/12

When the JN.1 wave hit in December, it was a big shift in mutations compared to previous dominant variant XBB*. It caused a big wave of infections – but still only about half of that achieved when Omicron first hit in 2021/22. Deaths were about a third of 1st Omicron wave. 4/12

We are also approaching summer (so less indoor mixing), many people have been recently infected with JN.1 (and so should have reasonable immunity to its subvariants 5 months later). The spring booster campaign is achieving good coverage of our most vulnerable population. 6/12

All this together means that I don’t think we’ll see a significant strain on hospitals from this wave and nor would I expect a peak prevalence as high as that achieved by JN.1 this winter (which was ~4% of population). Does this mean I think that Covid is fine? NO 7/12

Quick thread on the Astra Zeneca (AZ) covid vaccine since it's been in the news today. TLDR there isn't a new "smoking gun", the AZ vax was one of first and cheapest, it saved millions of lives globally, there are better vax out there now, adapted to new variants 1/9
