January is here, which means it’s time for Stray Cat Project’s Back to Basics series! 🐾📘 We encourage you to share these posts with your audience so we can collectively improve outcomes for community cats. 🤝🐈 The first post drops Monday—stay tuned!

TNR stands for trap/neuter/return and is the most humane method of community cat population control. It is a process whereby unowned, free-roaming cats are humanely trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped and returned to the outdoor habitat where they were found.

The "return" part of TNR After TNR, we RETURN them to where they were captured. We DO NOT release them to a different area, nor do we euthanize them. Community cats live in a 3-mile radius. Within this territory, they have established resources for food and shelter.

📖Our BACK TO BASICS SERIES: What is an ear tip? An ear-tip is the removal of the tip of the LEFT ear of a cat, while under anesthesia, by a veterinarian. It is the universally-recognized sign that a cat has been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. The cat likely has a caretaker.

A feral cat is A CAT THAT HAS NOT BEEN SOCIALIZED WITH HUMANS; they have not had human interaction. These cats fear humans and prefer to live outdoors, away from people. "Feral" does NOT refer to any cat living outdoors. "Feral" refers to DISPOSITION only!

📖Our BACK TO BASICS SERIES: feral vs. stray A FERAL cat is an outdoor cat that is not socialized with people. The term "feral" refers to disposition, not where the animal lives. A STRAY cat is a cat that lives outdoors and has been socialized to some degree with humans.

📚 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐒 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒: "𝐅𝐢𝐱 𝐚𝐭 𝟒" Aim to spay/neuter at or by 4 months of age. Kittens reach sexual maturity at four months of age. Wait any longer and your kitten may have kittens -- and that's NOT a good thing.

📚 Our BACK TO BASICS SERIES: female cats are “seasonally polyestrous" 🐱 As the amount of daylight begins to increase, their reproductive cycle of intact females kicks into gear. Kitty will continue to go into heat every 1 to 2 weeks until she gets pregnant. Spay that cat!

Valentine's Day is coming! Please be mindful of items hazardous to pets as you plan your celebration. 💖 Be especially careful if you're sending or if you receive a floral bouquet; lilies are highly toxic to cats! 🚫🌺 Please carefully pick them out or avoid them altogether. 💐🐈
