Fascinating: two different views of the Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud. In near-infrared light, the region’s diverse, colourful stars stand out, while much of the gas and dust structure remains hidden. In mid-infrared, warm dust glows brightly—revealing far more of the cloud’s

The dark spots over IC 2944 are Bok globules. These are isolated clouds of gas that are so cold (about –263° C or –442° F) and dense that they obscure visible light! This image was taken w/ the Blanco 4-m 🔭at @CerroTololo 📸:NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/T.A. Rector & N.S. van der Bliek

In one of its most visually compelling and scientifically productive observations to date, the #JWST captured a remarkably well-defined Einstein ring formed by the distant galaxy SPT0418-47. This system lies ~ 12 billion light-years from Earth, so it is observed as it existed

BREAKING🚨: Astronomers have identified a candidate supermassive black hole roaming through intergalactic space, leaving behind a spectacular trail of newborn stars stretching nearly 200,000 light-years—twice the diameter of the Milky Way itself.

Astronomers discovered these two clusters of sparkling light clinking together on New Year's Eve, 2020. Inspired by the date and the bubbly imagery, they nicknamed the galaxy cluster the Champagne Cluster — much easier to remember than its official name: RM J130558.9+263048.4.🍾

Some good development in AR 4325 over the past 3 days. It is now a beta-gamma region with a 30% chance of M-class and 5% chance of X-class flares. It is rotating into an increasingly Earth-facing position. How about some New Year's fireworks?

Peering deeper into the Cat’s Paw Nebula (NGC 6334), a massive, nearby stellar nursery. Webb reveals a restless scene: young, massive stars are chiselling away at gas and dust, while their intense light floods the region with a blue-tinted glow (Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI)

After 48 years of travel, NASA's Voyager 1 is nearing one light-day from Earth, almost 16 billion miles away. A proud milestone for humanity, and a humbling reminder of how small we are in an infinite universe.
