Plenty, albeit predominantly poor, discussion around the national dichotomy, or not, of clearance, internal colonialism, and empire last week. Revisiting the concluding chapter of Last of the Free, these sections contribute to a slightly missed part of the discussion.

Really enjoyed hearing about from Lowri Cunnington Wynn at the #SOILLSE22 conference. Concept of restanza sounds like something that is often desired but being denied in H&I (esp to younger people) due to issues surrounding housing & jobs. More here: iwa.wales/agenda/2022/07… Diolch, Lowri!

Heating oil now costs almost double what it did last year, and (as far as I’m aware) doesn’t come under any price caps or attract any assistance from govt at all- no matter how inadequate those for gas/ electric are, at least they are something. 40% of households were in fuel…

Retweet if I should do a meme for every broch (around 180 - 200) in Caithness this year Like if "no kenneth you have a social life and an actual job to attend to you maniac" the choice is yours

Fantastic to hear @SeamasHCarey on the Lesley Riddoch podcast with Patrick Joyce Seamas's podcast The Reason Why is the best limited series I've ever listened to and raised many of the issues residents of rural Scotland are facing. Funny and thought-provoking in equal measures.

While I am still in mourning at the lack of Caithness Broch Project calendar for 2024 it seems like they might have their work cut out building an actual broch instead. In the place of Caithness landscapes I'm delighted Christina Riley is doing these, support local artists.

One of the most inspiring projects I have seen in H&I, but the sheer graft that went into this by Community School alongside Communities Housing Trust shouldn't be underestimated. Needless to say, it shouldn't have been as hard as it was considering the goal and benefits.

My dad found this skull on a golf course in South Ayrshire and has no idea what it's from. Martin Gray can you or others help, please? It's about 7cm x 4cm.

In the 25 years pre-devolution the UK Government straightened and bypassed the A9 up to (then) modern standard, dualled 28 miles and built the Kessock, Cromarty, and Dornoch bridges along the road. In the 25 years post devolution the Scottish Government have dualled 11 miles.
