Because H5N1 is not a reportable disease in cows, it's likely we are underestimating this outbreak. Additionally, the majority of workers on dairy farms (especially large farms) are undocumented & are less likely to report symptoms. I worry we are underestimating human infections

The only key characteristics is that the genome for the human isolate had one change (PB2 E627K) that is known to be associated with viral adaptation to mammalian hosts. cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/s…

What happens when a former large animal vet (Meghan Davis ), a virologist (@andrewpekosz ) and a communications/podcaster/author (@sdesmon ) find each other in a zoom room? Well we discuss avian influenza infections in dairy cows of course!

As a scientist who studies influenza viruses and who also grew up on a dairy farm, I wanted to provide my two cents on the current outbreaks of H5N1 in cows and what this means for the dairy industry and human health.

Dear reviewers, understanding how viruses replicate in mammary glands/milk & infants is highly relevant for public health! (See current H5N1 outbreak in dairy cattle)

Doug Reed, Ph.D. 🔬🦠🤒⚽🎮 Stephanie N. Langel Probably through feeding kits. This was a litter study of infected kits feeding on their mothers. It was really hard to separate the potential of systemic infection and direct contact with the kits. For sure sialic acids are present in the glands.

Stephanie N. Langel Thanks for sharing! This has really been on my mind. We knew influenza can infect the mammaries. And actually I think it goes back to the 1930s when influenza virus was directly injected into cow udders.

Great response by Stanford University to the recent Lancet articles about menopause - these quotes are especially relevant:

“Menopause is repeatedly referred to as “overmedicalized” when in reality, the vast majority of women are left to navigate their perimenopausal and menopausal years…

What a lovely time hosting Carla Nowosad at CWRU School of Medicine today! A fascinating talk on B cell dynamics in gut germinal centers. And turns out, things in the gut aren't as polyreactive as we thought! Thanks for visiting Dr. Nowosad🌟 NYU Grossman School of Medicine

Big picture take-aways at this time:
1. These ruminant infections are very unusual because influenza A has never been reported in a ruminant before. Following up on these cows, and keeping an eye on other species will be important going forward.

In response to the H5N1 infections in cows and now a human in Texas, we've just updated our North America specific H5Nx Nextstrain build with the cow and goat sequences, which are viewable under 'Species-grouped: Ruminant': nextstrain.org/groups/moncla-…. A few notes.

I stepped down from NIH study section NANO this week. Between NANO & the 32 other study sections I have served ad hoc, I learned many things about how to construct a good grant.

Thus, I give you a song themed thread of potentially helpful grant tips!

Thanks Jessica Kasamoto for bringing attention to the virus outbreak. We need better vaccines against dengue that are safe and effective in all populations including children.
