The last prisoners were released from the infamous Omarska Concentration Camp on this day in 1992. The camp was known for the cruelty inflicted on its prisoners as well as the horrific conditions such as starvation, torture, and murder. We remember those who suffered at Omarska.

#OTD in 1992 Vijećnica library burned, librarians & citizens of Sarajevo tried desperately to save the irreplaceable work inside. At least one person lost their life to sniper fire & the majority of books were ultimately lost to the blaze. Cultural genocide must be condemned.

The second Markale massacre occurred around 18 months after the first, on 28 August 1995. Five mortar shells were fired on the local population at Markale Market killing 37 people and injuring 90. Horrific attacks on civilians like this was common during the siege of Sarajevo.

On this day Slobodan Milošević, former president of Serbia, was charged with genocide and crimes against humanity for his role in conducting a campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing in BiH. Milošević ultimately died in prison before his trial at the ICTY could conclude.
