Now an invited talk from Dr. James O'Keefe with his intriguingly titled talk "From mantis to machine", taking inspiration from praying mantises (manti?) to design machine vision systems.

We've had coffee, and now there's an invited talk from Dr. James O'Keeffe from Newcastle University presenting “From mantis to machine: A new bio-inspired algorithm for machine stereopsis”. His work is aiming to artificially replicate the 3D vision of a praying mantis. #IONSExeter

It's been an exciting afternoon. We've had Ruggero Emmanuele from The University of Sheffield talking about exciton-polaritons, followed by Lukas Ohnoutek from University of Bath telling us about his experimental observations of optical activity in hyper-Rayleigh scattering. #IONSExeter

Our work looking at the properties of the nanodiamonds formed during the detonation of explosives has just been published in Nanoscale Research Letters. nanoscalereslett.springeropen.com/articles/10.11… These nanodiamonds have wide-ranging applications, particularly in bio-imaging inside the body.

Our latest work on the potential for #Graphene capacitors to tune the resonance of silicon-rich nitride microrings has just been #published in Optics Express. We hope that this research forms the basis of designs for revolutionary computing systems. osapublishing.org/oe/abstract.cf…
