Greetings from Dakar, Senegal where delegates are gathering for a meeting called #GrandChallenges. In a nutshell: clever people get together and try and solve big problems. I keep learning mind-blowing things. One is about an #AI to improve #literacy in Mali /1

A group called RobotsMali decided to change this. In only eight weeks they used AI to creat a collection of 60 children’s books. Both the story, the words, in Bambara and the images were created using AI. They underwent revision with humans to make them culturally appropriate /3

Michael Leventhal, of Robots Mali, told the meeting the results were “astounding to us”. “Children that have never seen a book in their native language learn to read in an hour…. they are extremly passionate. It really changes their entire view of the world in... minutes”. /5
