Across the globe, the word most commonly used to describe Jamaicans is “resilient.” We count on that resilience now to weather the outcome of #HurricaneMelissa's fury. It is that resilience that equips us to power through & forge an even better, more formidable nation.

⚠Whether water-soaked land/the effects of 185 mph winds, #HurricaneMelissa likely compromised still-standing trees & utility poles, which can fall at any time. Exercise caution and s much as possible, avoid clear danger such as leaning trees or poles and downed power lines.

As we try to process & rebuild, we think of our neighbors in Cuba & Hait also affected by #HurricaneMelissa & other regions (Vietnam, Afghanistan, Philippines) reeling from devastating natural disasters. We are not alone. The earth is labouring & wailing. We shouldn't wonder why.

The images are heartrending. It is difficult to see the level of destruction and once-lush, green hillsides stripped and ravaged. Our landscapes and countrysides will recover, and so will we. #Jamaicans #sotallawah

The road looks long, steep, & winding, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. #BUTGOD This isn't only about rebuilding; it's about a complete 180. #HurricaneMelissa won't break us. This is an opportunity to turn things around & reclaim decency, civility, & civic pride.

Politicians, this is not a time for grandstanding/seeking opportunities to win support. This is the time to show unity & promote unified governance. Other nations, including leaders across the Caribbean, are showing up— & our own politicians are hindering our progress. Shameful!

Now approximately 1 month since #HurricaneMelissa made landfall in Jamaica as a "historic" Category 5 hurricane. Our island took a walloping, & #wearestillstanding. Let us give our leaders grace. Let us pray for leaders. Instead of criticizing, help. This is not an overnight fix.

We no longer see that unique sense of community that defined Jamaica decades ago - especially in our towns. Pockets of that spirit still exist, and we've seen many examples over the last month. Imagine if we could go back to those days...
