Hello, we are #SonicDE, the community-driven Sonic Desktop Environment. Aiming to preserve and improve the #X11-specific aspects of #KDE. There are already `*-sonic` packages in the Arch Linux AUR, on Artix Linux as well as talks with maintainers of other distributions.

The #OpenMandriva maintainers will package #SonicDE "unless and until Wayland makes so much progress that #X11 becomes as obsolete as #Wayland advocates today say it is". They also consider talking about SonicDE as on-topic in their channels and forum. github.com/orgs/Sonic-DE/…

In the last few days, we've created channels on Discord, Matrix, OFTC, and Telegram, welcoming you there. We've improved our #SonicDE GitHub workflow, polished our READMEs, and upstreamed the first small contribution to #KDE Plasma Workspace. We're ready. For an announcement.

We set up everything and waited 6 weeks for #KDE's announcement. Nothing. We repeatedly tried to contact the representative and his colleagues, but they didn't respond. That's a pity. We had high hopes and had already agreed on a good collaboration. 2/3

Unfortunately, we have to say something about the planned announcement. Back in November 2025, we were told by a #KDE representative: "We [KDE] will gladly give the project a shout out on social media for those who find the shift to Wayland a problem. This works for us." 1/3

#SonicDE was introduced today as a spin of the new #Vendefoul Wolf #Linux series #Viriato. Viriato is based on #Devuan 7 Freia with kernel 6.18. You can download the testing ISO at vendefoul-wolf-linux.sourceforge.io, scrolling through to "VENDEFOUL SONICDE - DEVUAN 7."

I have been daily driving Artix Linux + XLibre + SonicDE for one month. This combination is rock solid. I love functional software.

We've started implementing a #Vulkan backend for the sonic-win window manager. That's an alternative to #OpenGL and could bring us a step closer to #HDR rendering. Please see github.com/Sonic-DE/sonic… . #SonicDE
