After 30 years of research and teaching, I found that I cannot teach any subject unless I have understood it fully. Hence I normally had to write a book before I teach any new course. Also, I found that, teaching is the best, probably only, way to do deeper and better research.

What many ppl don’t get: Once you miss a concept in math—maybe you don’t quite get how functions work—you’re *screwed*, unless you do a hardcore catchup boot camp, in which case you’ll be fine. But schools don’t do this— they keep advancing. Only parents offer this service.
