Did you ever see such an enormous fern leaf? This is Hercules' fern (Drynaria heracleum) from the rainforests of Southeast Asia, with trail-running fern specialist John Rey Callado for scale 💚

The taxonomic biases in biodiversity data are growing over time. The amount of data we are collecting is growing, but the biases get bigger. We need to make a conscious effort to study the understudied! #SciComms #Science #Taxonomy image: Troudet et al 2018 Nature Portfolio

Yareta (Azorella compacta) may look like a moss, but is a broad-leafed plant in the carrot 🥕 family, Apiaceae. This pictures were taken in Bolivian, at an elevation of 14000 ft. These plants are estimated to be over over 3000 years old. This large specimen may be over 1000

An additional use for herbarium specimens? Not sure that this should be added to Vick Funk's article '100 Uses for an Herbarium' though... repository.si.edu/bitstream/hand…

🚨New Paper Alert🚨 Together with Harpo Faust and Hannah Marx, PhD I synthesized botanical data from across New Mexico to find patterns and gaps in biodiversity info. Data, code and resources are all freely available. Thanks to Museum of Southwestern Biology and the botanists who made it possible. 1/2

#FernFriday Our annual activity of digging underground gametophytes of Sceptridium ferns, this time with some fresh hands! Surprisingly, the undergraduate Diya found the largest one we had ever seen, nearly 3 cm!
