More news from “free speech” land. These policy changes are growing more absurd each day. It’s almost as if Musk bought this platform for the sole purpose of breaking it. | Twitter to ‘remove’ content linking to Facebook and other platforms, it says washingtonpost.com/technology/202…

This does paint a vivid picture. But it's baffling to think about all the other occurrences that were omitted because they couldn't fit on the graphic.

Twitter has been a bit *unstable* lately (to say the least). But, I'm teaching a class on technology, power, and the public sphere this term, so it seems fitting that we hang around here to see how things unfold over the coming months. Looking forward to it, #so3801!

It's a sad day for academic research, though predictable given what's happened under Elon. Access will get more unequal, but how reasonable will the price be? | Twitter to end free access to its API in Elon Musk's latest monetization push tcrn.ch/3WXOrKh via TechCrunch

It feels strange to share this here, but also perfectly fitting. Journalism has had a special place on Twitter, which is why I wrote a dissertation/book about it. It seems like that era is coming to a slow, uneventful end. theguardian.com/technology/202…

Texas Gov Abbott has installed circular saws between the Rio Grande border buoys to maim or kill anyone who attempts to climb over. Two bodies have already been found trapped in the floating barrier. He wants more migrants to die.

Wow! #ASA2023 was such a whirlwind. It was so refreshing to see old friends and colleagues, and make new ones as well. The start of the semester is here, but I’m already looking forward to next year.

Back at it again for another semester. Teaching a class on Violence, Media, and Culture, and another on Deviance and Social Control. Let's go, #so339 and #so345!

I analyzed 20+ years of NSF survey data. Since 2015, academia has been the "alternative" career path for PhDs. But it was the breakdown by field that really shocked me. Do these graphs match your PhD experience? 1/
