@slpfunctional

I'm a speech language pathologist. I believe we should stop testing our kids and engage in therapy activities that target functional communication.

Today in #speechtherapy I used #exercise to improve breath support and #voice volume. My patient loved to run from the slide to the swings and back again before producing sentences. Her family participated by checking for #intelligibility. Fun and functional. #SLPeeps #SLP #Kids

Yes Ashley! I agree. I enjoy the moments when I can use my intellect and humanity to help my patients realize theirs. A truly beautiful profession that for me is a cross between scientist and artist. x.com/EyerSLP/status…

Saw this beautiful poem when I was a #SLP student years ago. I remember it often as I work with families who live these words daily. #SLPeeps #speechtherapy #SpecialEd #autismawareness #slp2b

Sometimes it amazes me how much language kids have when they are engaged in pretend play compared to when demands are placed on them during an adult directed task. Next step? How do we make that pretend play language functional for communication with others during daily routines? x.com/kathayy3/statu…

Today in #speech I used voice recognition on my phone to motivate my patients with #dysarthria, #articulation and #voice disorders to communicate clearly. It's even more motivating to text mom or dad, send an email or turn on music. A super fun and FUNctional activity.

Today in #speech I used small toys such as play food and toy cars and planes to target action words. My kids found the toys hidden around the room or enclosed in plastic eggs and then created a sentence such as "The plane is flying" or "I eat pizza" Much more fun than pictures.
