Nearly 700,000 people fled the UK last year. The highest number on record. Three quarters were under 35. How does a G7 nation, the birthplace of the industrial revolution, start to collapse? 7 key mistakes Britain made that your country could be about to repeat:

1) Playing defence. After the 2008 crash, the UK had two options. Cut spending or invest in the future. They chose to cut. Infrastructure, R&D, skills programmes, adult education. All the things that actually grow an economy quietly disappeared.

2) Protecting housing prices. The average home in England now costs 7.7 times the median salary. In London it's 10.5 times. In some areas, 25 times. Historically, a house is considered affordable at 3 to 4 times someone's salary.

3) The execution of Brexit. This isn't about whether Brexit was right or wrong. It's about what happens when politicians can't follow through. Before the vote, UK business investment grew 6% a year. The morning after, it collapsed to zero.

UK GDP is now 6 to 8% lower than it would've been. That's £100 to £200 billion missing from the economy every single year. That missing number is paid by every household through slower wages and higher prices.

4) Paralysing debt. COVID and the Ukraine war added roughly £500 billion to UK national debt in just 5 years. Then interest rates rose to fight inflation. Annual interest payments jumped from £40 billion to over £100 billion.

For context, the entire UK defence budget is around £60 billion. Britain now pays nearly double that, every year, just in interest. They can't tax or borrow their way out of this trap.

5) Triggering the productivity doom loop. 1 million people have dropped out of the UK workforce due to long-term illness since the pandemic. The NHS now has 7.3 million people on its waiting lists. That's 1 in 11 people in the country.

A hip operation might cost a few thousand pounds if done on time. Wait 18 months for it, and that person costs the economy hundreds of thousands in lost wages, tax, and benefit payments. The loop spins, and the country gets weaker.

6) Driving the youth away. In 2025, the UK Office for National Statistics quietly revised their numbers. The real figure of Brits leaving the country wasn't 77,000 a year. It was 252,000. One of the highest in modern history.

More than 1 in 4 of all 18-30 year olds in the UK are seriously considering leaving or already planning to. These are the most skilled, ambitious, tax-paying people the country has. And they're going to Australia, Canada and Spain.

7) The political trap. The UK state pension rises every year by whichever is highest: inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%. A one way ratchet that only goes up. It now costs £12 billion more per year than if pensions just tracked wages.

Why doesn't anyone fix it? Because over-65s vote at roughly twice the rate of under-35s. No politician will cut pensioners' incomes before an election. The young leave. The pool of young voters shrinks further. The cycle continues.
