This is the smallest Vespa species in Singapore! It is now presumed to be nationally extinct, as recent efforts to locate it within our nature reserves have been unsuccessful. 😢 🔗: signifynaturalhistory.sg #SIGNIFYNatHistory #DigitisingNatHistory #Singapore #Specimens

Lydia from the SIGNIFY team gave an energetic and engaging talk about the fantastic SIGNIFY project. This aims to create a digital collection of zoological specimens from Singapore but held in collections around the world. Amazing example of collaboration! #natsca2024

The next specimen featured on the MCZ series is Rhizoprionodon oligolinx, also known as the grey sharpnose shark. It is a surprise to know that there were/are sharks in Singapore’s waters. 😮🦈 Part of what SIGNIFY does includes scribing original descriptions! 🖊️ Museum of Comparative Zoology

This week, we feature Todiramphus chloris humii, or the collared kingfisher! This specimen was collected in 1937, and “came aboard the S.S. Rhexenor at night”. It is likely that the bird flew onto the ship and was opportunistically collected by the people onboard!🫢Museum of Comparative Zoology

This month, SIGNIFY celebrates our 2nd year anniversary 🎉🎂 A big part about the project revolves around specimen we digitisation, so what better way to celebrate this than showcasing specimens whose names start with the letters that make up S-I-G-N-I-F-Y 🤩
