This Cuckoo nestling, ringed in a Meadow Pipit nest last summer by Ellie Ness of our #BTO nest recording group in the New Forest was recaptured just 33 days later on the German island of Helgoland. Only the 5th British ringed Cuckoo to be found in Germany.

One of 62 Bright Wave seen yesterday at the recently established colony in West Sussex. I would place money on there being other undiscovered colonies along the south or east coasts. Any nutrient poor habitat with frequent trefoils is worth looking at.

Didn't find my target species this afternoon but the combination of Nightjar, Lunar Hornet Moth, Buttoned Snout larva, Field Cricket and singing Turtle Dove was pretty impressive for Hampshire

Really poor results for mid-July in the moth traps last night but mission accomplished; Feathered Beauty in a new 10km square.

Went to check on the Phiaris schulziana colony at what may be its only remaining southern England site and stumbled across a couple of Sundew Plume Buckleria paludum, the first VC12 record since 1928.

I must have seen thousands of Coleophora vibicella larval cases over the years. Normally they are black but sometimes there are rings of paler material. Never seen anything like this before though. The important question is, did the larvae in the blonde cases have more fun?

I wasn't looking for the Hayling stick insects this evening but this one kindly climbed up the bush next to me and posed. Bacillus rossius.

The rarely recorded (or rarely looked for?) larva of Coleophora squamosella. It feeds within the seedheads of Blue Fleabane.
