Did you know that basking sharks can jump!? Scientists aren't completely sure why they do this - it might be to dislodge parasites or to communicate with other sharks, or maybe it's just for fun! sophiemaycocksharkspeak.com/post/fantastic… #sharks #scicomm #Science #oceans #wildlife @jlrudd

Most #sharks are 'stenohaline', so can only live in the oceans. However, some sharks, like the #bullshark, are 'euryhaline', meaning they have a wide salinity tolerance and can venture into rivers! #scicomm #oceans #factfriday

You might have noticed that many sharks are darker on the top and light on their belly. This countershading may be for camouflage... for UV protection... or be a vestigial trait that now has no function at all? sophiemaycocksharkspeak.com/post/shady-cha… #sharks #scicomm #evolution

Did you know that there are now sharks in the River Thames! Thanks so better sewage treatment and monitoring of water quality, the once-dead tidal Thames is now home to 3 different species of sharks! sophiemaycocksharkspeak.com/post/london-ca… #sharks #sscicomm #Thames #London ZSL

Sharks are very different from other fishes because their skeletons are made of cartilage, not bone! Cartilage is less mineralised than bone, so it can protect the all the squishy vital organs, whilst still allowing the shark to stay light and manoeuvrable. #sharks #scicomm
