A very stimulating paper by Carl Simpson and colleagues, which I've had a chance to review, on the expansion of the notion of fitness to so called 'expansion fitness' concept which can be applied to multiple levels of the genealogical hierarchy.

Richly deserved -I was lucky enough to spend time in the field with him as a Ph.D student, and in addition to his *numerous* scientific contributions and tireless outreach efforts, @NHM_Bryozoa is a committed mentor and one of the nicest and kindest people in paleontology

This thread and associated paper should be required reading for every first year graduate student, and again at the end of graduate school. Or really any other transition, it’s full of applicable deep wisdom worth revisiting again and again with evolving eyes

X promoted a trending story on Thursday via its homepage with the headline:
“Iran Strikes Tel Aviv with Heavy Missiles”

one problem: the story was fake

even worse: the headline + story was created by a new feature powered by X’s own AI chatbot, Grok mashable.com/article/elon-m…

A quick comparison of the USGS DYFI reports for today's New Jersey mag 4.8 with yesterday's N. California mag 4.4. Same exact map scale. Besides the obvious difference in population density, notice the difference in felt area!

Seeing everyone I follow from MD to CT posting about M4.7 quake in NJ & then discovering there was a M4.5 in NorCal yesterday that nobody in the Bay Area felt nicely illustrates seismic difference between cold, solid eastern lithosphere and warm, faulted western lithosphere

Mass coral bleaching unfolding at Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef (March 2024). These events have become “normalised” to the point where it’s easy to forget that 20 yrs ago this would have been an unprecedented and isolated event.
