Delighted to be commissioned by Nuffield Foundation to prepare a data led overview of the current issues facing access to justice in E&W.

The review found *47 data* and *80 key evidence gaps* that impede our ability to improve our justice system. Justice Committee Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) MP

Hong Kongers’ rights are met with coercion, bullying, & suppression each day by the Chinese Communist Party.

I joined 75 international legislators & public figures to condemn Hong Kong government passage of Article 23 & crack down on basic freedoms.

The only trans judge in the UK has stood down because it is untenable to do her job in a dignified way in the current climate. A huge loss to the judiciary and for representation. This ought to cause some long overdue self-reflection in some quarters, but likely won't.

In this article, I argue that while in economics the PUBLIC good is a ‘correction’ for market failures, the COMMON good must be much more: a collective ‘objective’ where the how matters as much as the what. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

The Data Protection and Digital Information Bill is an important opportunity for the Government to deliver on its commitments and make the UK a world leader in safe, responsible and trustworthy innovation. As currently drafted, it does not seize this opportunity.🧵(1/4)

Now is probably the time to announce that I've been writing a book about OpenAI, the AI industry & its impacts. Here is a slice of my book reporting, combined with reporting from the inimitable Charlie Warzel. Inside the year of chaos that led to this weekend. theatlantic.com/technology/arc…

I have no idea why Sam Altman was fired and, from the 10,000 other posts on the topic, nobody else does either. As a result, no one knows what this means for OpenAI or AI in general. Hopefully that saves you some time on Twitter.

The Data Protection and Digital Information Bill 'has been co-designed with industry, for industry, in order to maximise the economic benefits.'

So 'Post-Brexit freedoms' = UK data protection law is now designed by and for industry ...

The government's reports on AI risks helped crystallise for me that the starting point for many people taking about AI safety is 'I want to build an AI that doesn't cause harm.', rather than 'I would like people to thrive in a world with AI.'
