One of the main problems that plagued ships was food, and how to store it. This was a particular problem in the earlier days when ships were small and compact. They carried a few livestock but for the most part sailors would have to be happy with hard biscuits and salted meats

The food would become mouldy quickly due to the damp conditions and that's not even to mention the insects and vermin that would get into it first. They would, of course, restock at friendly ports but you could be at sea for some weeks without finding one of those.

Scurvy was nasty stuff, the men's teeth would fall out, they had bleeding gums, severe joint pain and it would envitably led to death. Over 2 million sailors died of scurvy between the 16th & 18th centuries, that is more than shipwrecks and combat combined!
